Yankees vs Red Sox Free MLB predictions: It’s all tied up atop the American League East after the Red Sox beat the Yankees in the series opener last night. Don’t be surprised if these two fight it out until the final weekend of the season. The two powerhouse rivals will meet on Wednesday night MLB on ESPN tonight.
Tim Wakefield has seen plenty of the New York Yankees over his long career. Wakefield is 11-17 with a career ERA of 4.90 against New York.
The knuckleballer has been pitching quite well this year, but he’ll certainly be tested by this Yankees lineup. Last night the Red Sox offense ran Freddy Garcia out of the game in the second inning. Jacoby Ellsbury and David Ortiz continued their hot hitting.
It has been the resurgence of guys like Ortiz and Carl Crawford that has really brought this team to life over the past month. While many people overlook it because of their terrific offense, the Red Sox often win games because of their great defense as well. Boston has committed just 27 errors this year, which is the third best mark in the majors.
A.J. Burnett will take to the mound for the Yankees on Wednesday night. Burnett is 5-3 with a 4.79 ERA in his career against the Red Sox. Boston has the hottest offense in the majors right now, so he will have his work cut out for him in this one. Burnett has been much better so far in 2011 than he was last year, and this team will definitely need him to continue to raise that level the rest of this year.
The biggest concern in the Yankees camp is over the health of Mark Teixeira after being hit by a pitch in the knee on Tuesday night. It is doubtful that he will play Wednesday night, but the Yankees will definitely be hoping his time off is brief. Jorge Posada is likely to start in his place at first base.
As hot as the Red Sox bats are right now, I think getting them at plus money is a great value. Wakefield isn’t likely to shut down the Yankees, but he will eat up some innings. I like Boston in this one.
